Design of a Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter Based on Power Electronics Building Blocks and Control for High Performance

Abstract: This paper proposes a practical design for a Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel (CHBM) inverter based on Power Electronics Building Blocks (PEBB) and high performance control to improve current control and increase fault tolerance. It is shown that the expansion and modularization characteristics of the CHBM inverter are improved since the individual inverter modules operate more independently, when using the PEBB concept. It is also shown that the performance of current control can be improved with voltage delay co… Show more

“…On the other hand, APFs can be applied to medium -voltage (MV) applications using combined series active and parallel passive filters, or an active filter in series with parallel passive filters [8,9]. However, these solutions are not compact, especially when multiple passive filters are adopted.…”

“…However, the transformer approach shows the disadvantage of a large volume, a high cost, and a high bandwidth requirement to be in compatible with harmonic injection frequencies. The series operation of semiconductor switches faces the problems of unbalanced static and dynamic voltage sharing due to the spread of device characteristics and mismatched driver and snubber circuits [9], [10]. limited switching frequency of the power semiconductor devices, and achieving simultaneous dc capacitor voltage balancing and sufficient controller bandwidth is rather complicated.…”

“…Active power filters (APFs) are considered to be the most effective solution to these power quality problems, and they have been extensively studied in recent literatures [3], [4]. This paper aims to present a robust predictive control algorithm for APFs using a smith-predictor, which has better properties when compared to proportionalintegral (PI) current regulators in terms of improvements in the closed-loop bandwidth and better steady-state precision.…”

“…Multilevel inverters include an array of power semiconductors and capacitor voltage sources, the output of which generate voltages with stepped waveforms. Three different topologies for multilevel inverters consist of diode-clamped (NPC) Inverter ,capacitor-clamped (FC) Inverter and cascaded multi cell with separate dc sources [8], [9]. The DVR systems compensated voltage by voltage injected, with the power source voltage of parallel transformer (output voltage 0.5 per unit (pu.))…”
