Design Guidelines for Immersive Dashboards

Abstract: Immersive dashboards facilitate the presentation of large-scale complex data while offering natural interaction and real-time interactivity supporting immediate use. Few studies, however, have investigated the use of immersive dashboards to improve the visualization and analysis of abstract data. This study provides a systematic review of the literature on designing immersive dashboards for abstract data visualization and analytics. Twenty publications met the inclusion criteria. This review identifies guideli… Show more

“…For example, in a VR-based environment, users can enter and move in the virtual world with a first-person view and a “sense of presence,” while feeling spatially realistic [ 47 ]. The user can wear interactive devices (e.g., head-mounted device (HMD) and hand-held display (HHD)) to view the twinning objects in the virtual environment and use multi-sensory tracked controllers to experience the programmed activities with low-latency motions [ 48 ]. AR is another representative XR technology, and its virtual 3D objects are merged with real surroundings, which enables the user to see the overlapped reality [ 49 ].…”

“…The Dashboard Interactions are all interactive components in the dashboard that can be controlled by a user through input devices (e.g., mouse and/or keyboard). In typical dashboards, interactions are closely tied to visual components to create an immersive dashboard experience [MM21]. This close relationship has led to ambiguities concerning the view and controller parts of the MVC pattern [ADK * 12].…”

“…The issue is exacerbated by the small field of view (FOV) of current state-of-the-art AR headsets. Situated visualizations that are presented independently of individual referents can naturally consolidate the data pertaining to many referents in one view or dashboard [MM21,SLQS23]. Instead of looking at multiple embedded visualizations, a single situated overview visualization can be looked at instead.…”
