Design Guidelines for a Capacitive Wireless Power Transfer System with Input/Output Matching Transformers

Abstract: -A capacitive wireless power transfer (C-WPT) system uses an electric field to transmit power through a physical isolation barrier which forms a pair of ac link capacitors between the metal plates. However, the physical dimension and low dielectric constant of the interface medium severely limit the effective link capacitance to a level comparable to the main switch output capacitance of the transmitting circuit, which thus narrows the soft-switching range in the light load condition. Moreover, by fundamental … Show more

“…A modified LLC topology utilizes a shunt inductor on the secondary side to be able to operate outside resonance conditions, increasing the versatility of the CPT system [67,76,79]. In addition, transformers on the primary and/or secondary side can realize the required voltage change and serve as impedance transformation [80][81][82].…”

“…Therefore, high voltages between metal plates are required to build the strong electric field to achieve high power transfer. To increase the plate voltage, a double-sided matching transformer is used to suppress the voltage stress to realise power transfer [20]. However, high power and efficiency transformers at a high frequency usually up to megahertz are costly and challenging for CPT system.…”
