Design for diagnostics and prognostics: A physical-functional approach

Abstract: This paper describes an end-to-end Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) development process with a strong emphasis on the COTS software tools employed for the implementation of this process. A mix of physical simulation and functional failure analysis was chosen as a route for early assessment of degradation in complex systems as capturing system failure modes and their symptoms facilitates the assessment of health management solutions for a complex asset. The method chosen for the IVHM development is c… Show more

“…Whilst fuel systems can suffer other faults besides those listed here, this is a compilation of some of the most common. This approach is consistent with the work published by (Niculita, et al, 2012;Niculita, et al, 2013;Niculita , et al, 2014), who used the same test rig to develop and test different IVHM solutions for aircraft fuel systems.…”

“…The work by Niculita, Jennions, & Irving (2013) describes the design process of a fuel test rig based on a UAV engine feed system. The entire test set-up compromises of the actual test-rig, but also various other tools which facilitate the use of fault detection and isolation: such as a failure-mode analyses, a model simulator, test-rig controller, fault injection unit and data acquisition.…”

“…It is important to consider at this stage, the division between on-board and off-board capability under which IVHM has to be implemented and deployed. Niculita et al (2013a) introduced an IVHM development process capable of answering some of the IVHM design related questions. These are questions such as:…”
