Design, fabrication, and characterization of microstructured polymer optical fibers

Abstract: Fabrication and characferiration of microstructured polymer optical fibers (MPOFs) are presented. The effects of drawing femperahrre and heating fime during the fabrication processes are studied. Thefibers ahibif single-mode characteristics as predicted by numerical simulation. SUMMARYSilica-based photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) have been studied extensively since they were successfully fabricated. Compared to traditional optical fibers, PCFs have a lot of attractive features. For example, with proper air hole … Show more

“…By the improving of fabrication techniques, it is promising to reduce the transmission loss to practical degree. In addition, the in situ chemical fabrication technology of PM-pPCFs by our group presented firstly has many advantages such as considerable good optical transmittance and lower transmission loss, birefringence good independence on temperature, flexibility in structure designing, wonderful holes remaining, low-cost manufacturing and so on [18]. It is predictable that it will become straightforward to obtain different structure of polarization-maintaining in the preform rods with such method.…”

“…More recently microstructured fibres have been made in polymer [12], where the most commonly used preform fabrication technique is drilling with a CNC mill [13]. Capillary stacking has also been used [14][15][16] and billet extrusion is being explored for novel designs [17] but none of these are particularly suitable for mass production.…”
