Design documentation quality influential variables in the construction sector

Abstract: There are numerous studies on design documentation variables without efforts to evaluate their level of importance. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the significance of these variables towards improving design documentation quality. A questionnaire survey to identify the significance of key quality variables was carried out. A total of 139 variables on design documentation quality were used. The mean score and Standard deviation of each factor were used to determine the level of significance. Ba… Show more

“…The owner assigns responsibility to the designer for various designs of the project. Good-quality design documentation is necessary for project efficiency (accurate or accurate, thorough, and unambiguous), although it is unfortunate that these documents frequently contain erroneous or conflicting information and are frequently incomplete [42]. Inexperienced designers make numerous errors, which are typical, especially in sophisticated and complicated power projects.…”

“…Graduate architect should give greater attention to the following quality management practices: the requirements of clients and end-users, producing correct and complete drawings and speci cations, coordinating and checking contract documentation, conducting design veri cation, controlling changes and committing to provide quality service (Levy, 2018;Mahdavinejad et al, 2012). The modi cation of the design, quality or quantity of the works, the correction of discrepancies between the contract documents, the removal of materials from site, the opening up of covering work, the condemnation, replacement and remediation of defective work, the postponing of work, the dismissal of incompetent or misconducting personnel and any other matters relating to the contract shall be formalized with an instruction (Agbaxode et al, 2021). Moreover, intensive review of plans and speci cations is a must between consultants to counter check of discrepancy and practicality (Heerkens, 2002).…”

“…question, answer from consultants etc(Ayodeji, Bhekisia, & Aigbavboa, 2016;Heerkens, 2002). A regular review of outstanding contractor's submission should take place during site meeting where status should be documented accordingly(Agbaxode, Dlamini, & Saghatforoush, 2021;Ayodeji et al, 2016). Close monitoring of RFI status is required as it will affect either cost or time which will generate variation order proposal.…”

“…The quality of construction design documentation plays a significant role in efficient project delivery due to its inevitable nature in construction. It is an important product of a project hence should provide adequate information to enhance the effective execution of the works (Agbaxode et al, 2021a;Akampurira and Windapo, 2019;Levy, 2018). Design documentation in practice includes; "drawings (architectural, engineering or structural); specifications; bill of quantities; schedule of rates; bids and bonds; conditions of contract; contracts" (Akampurira and Windapo, 2019;Sunday and Afolarin, 2013;Laryea, 2011;Mena et al, 2010) just to list a few.…”

“…While there is extensive use of design documentation in practice, researchers and practitioners have argued that the quality is often poor and bedevil with inaccurate information globally (Agbaxode et al, 2021a;Windapo, 2019, 2018;Levy, 2018) with significant impacts on project delivery (Agbaxode et al, 2021b). The impacts include a reduction in project quality, project delays and cost overruns (Tuhacek and Svoboda, 2019;Abdallah et al, 2018;Akampurira and Windapo, 2018).…”
