Design, construction and evaluation of a fiber extracting machine from Calotropis (milkweed) stems

Abstract: Due to many advantages, natural fibers have been of great interest recently in many researches and industries. Calotropis stem has valuable fibers with various applications in the industry. Regarding this; a fiber extracting machine is designed and constructed, based on mechanical method. The machine performance is evaluated in this research as well. The machine consists of three separation units and two feeding units. Each separation unit is comprised of; a frame, a pair of blades, a pair of roller, two yoke … Show more

“…It may be seen from the figure that initially increased and then decreased with increasing roller speed (550–920 rpm), gap (2–4 mm), and pitch of the blade (0.5–2.5 mm). A similar pattern of initial increase followed by a decline in efficiency with increasing roller speed has been reported for calotropis fibers (Tarabi et al, 2015). With respect to gap and pitch, the behavior of the curve may be attributed to a similar variation in the yield.…”

“…All the parameters including independent, interaction, and quadratic, except for the interaction AB and the quadratic term B 2 were found to have significant effect on energy consumption. According to reported studies (Oreko et al, 2018;Tarabi et al, 2015), energy consumption increases with rotational speed, which is evident in our results also. The effect of independent parameters on the energy consumption of the multiple fiber extractor is shown in Figure 3e,f.…”

“…Calotropis stem has valuable fibers with various applications in the industry. Since extraction found to be more complex, extraction machine with the capacity of 2 kg/h based on dried mass of barks and fibers was developed [6]. Calotropis gigentea fruit fiber reinforced composites was prepared and mechanically tested.…”

“…Besides, there is still a very import part of the plant can be used widely, that is, calotropis gigantea fiber. Fibers can be obtained from the seeds or stems of the plant [12][13][14][15]. This paper only focuses on seed fibers.…”
