Design and synthesis of novel pomegranate-like TiN@MXene microspheres as efficient sulfur hosts for advanced lithium sulfur batteries

Abstract: A novel pomegranate-like TiN@MXene microsphere was constructed by a facile spray drying method and synergistically enhanced the conversion of polysulfides in Li–S batteries.

“…In the final step, the “thiourea method” was employed to sulfurize the Co nanoparticles on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface, leading to the formation of hollow Co 1– x S/3D-Ti 3 C 2 T x hierarchical structures. This synthetic approach effectively induces strong interfacial effects and allows for precise control over the size of the resulting metal sulfide species …”

“…This synthetic approach effectively induces strong interfacial effects and allows for precise control over the size of the resulting metal sulfide species. 26 Figure S3 shows the XRD spectra of the 3D-Ti 3 C 2 T x and Co 1−x S/3D-Ti 3 C 2 T x composite materials. As depicted in the figure, the sharp diffraction peaks of Co 1−x S/3D-Ti 3 C 2 T x correspond well with the crystal planes of Co 1−x S (JCPDS no.…”

“…S7b (ESI†) consistent with previous reports. 22 The peaks at 24.8° and 43.5° of Ti 3 C 2 T x /CNFs correspond to the (002) and (100) planes of the graphitized structure (Fig. 2a), 23 but TiO 2 is not detected, confirming that Ti 3 C 2 T x is not oxidized during high-temperature carbonization.…”

“…Additionally, polar materials, such as metal sulfides, nitrides, and oxides, have also been compounded with MXenes as sulfur hosts [74,[94][95][96][97][98][99][100] . Specifically, Tian et al grew VS 4 nanoparticles on the surfaces of MXene nanosheets by the hydrothermal method, and imported graphene oxide (GO) to build a 3D conductive network aerogel [Figure 7A] [95] .…”

“…The batteries equipped with S/GO@MXene@VS 4 obtained an ultra-low decay rate of 0.019% per cycle after performance (an area specific capacity of 3.5 mAh cm -2 under sulfur loading of 5.3 mg cm -2 ) [96] . For the first time, Zhang et al synthesized oxygen-vacancy-rich Ti n O 2n-1 quantum dots (OV-T n QDs) decorated on porous carbon nanosheets (PCN) (OV-T n QDs@PCN) nanohybrids using Ti 3 C 2 T x as a precursor [97] . OV-T n QDs@PCN/S with a high S content of 79.1% was obtained by mixing evenly OV-TnQDs@PCN powder with elemental sulfur powder in a mass ratio of 1/4, heating them at 155 °C for 24 h, and then annealing the mixture at 200 °C for 2 h to remove the additional sulfur.…”
