Design and planning problems in flexible manufacturing systems: a critical review

Abstract: This review paper describes the state-of-the-art research on flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) design and planning issues. The emphasis is on presenting research results coming out of the current FMS literature that help the FMS manager in setting up a highly efficient manufacturing system. In addition to that, it discusses relevant research contributions after 1986, that were not part of any of the previous survey papers on operations research models for FMSs. Also, applications of combinatorial optimizati… Show more

“…There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of articles that touch on some of the decisions we consider in our framework, and indeed several books have been written on these topics, for example, Kusiak (1986), Ranky (1984Ranky ( , 1990, Tetzlaff (1990), and Tempelmeier and Kuhn (1993). In addition, Buzacott and Yao (1986), Kouvelis (1992), Gunasekaran et al (1993) and Solot and van Vliet (1994) provide surveys of early research on design and planning of FMS. Elmaraghy and Ravi (1992), and Evans and Haddock (1992), provide surveys of tools that have been used in this context.…”

“…Gray et al (1988) Kouvelis (1989), and Stecke andSuri (1984 and) cite comprehensive references to recent literature in flexible manufacturing. However, Gaimon (1985 and has presented different continuous time acquisition models for determining optimal price and output rate of an aggregate product and optimal acquisition rate of new technology.…”

“…Therefore, two main factors may cause the resort to the flexibility such as the uncertainty and the variability. Panagiotis Kouvelis (1992) have presented an overview of the flexible manufacturing systems and the contribution of flexibility in the efficiency of the firm.…”
