“…The E. coli tRNA that was used for these experiments is a mixture of tRNAs of which approximately two-thirds are 76 nucleotides in length and the other third are approximately 86 in length and most of the species have been sequenced. By consulting the recently published compilation of tRNA sequences by Gauss and Sprinzl8, we were able to make a list of all of the possible modified nucleosides that have been found in the E. coli tRNAs which is the following : 4-thiouridine, dihydrouridine, ribothymidine, pseudouridine, 7 inosine, and several unidentified derivatives of uridine, guanosine, and adenosine. Obviously, all of these modified nucleosides are not present in the tRNA used for this study, but the possibility of their presence had to be considered when the mass spectrum of the tRNA was examined.…”
