Design and optimization of a microstrip patch antenna for increased bandwidth

Abstract: With the ever-increasing need for wireless communication and the emergence of many systems, it is important to design broadband antennas to cover a wide frequency range. The aim of this paper is to design a broadband patch antenna, employing the three techniques of slotting, adding directly coupled parasitic elements and fractal electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures. The bandwidth is improved from 9.3 to 23.7%. A wideband ranging from 4.15 to 5.27 GHz is obtained. Also, a comparative analysis of embedding E… Show more

“…Therefore, mutual coupling can be utilized to achieve bandwidth enhancement with desired performance of reflection coefficient and realized gain by cancelling the reflected waves from each element to the feeding network. Because printed slot antennas are promising candidate used in phased arrays, satellite communication systems and airborne applications due to their compact size and high efficiency, two and four element slot arrays are used to study their mutual coupling and to demonstrate the bandwidth enhancement by invoking suitable mutual coupling [1316]. Mutual coupling between array elements affects both the embedded element radiation patterns and the element input impedances.…”

“…As for example, introducing artificial magnetic conductor , implementing fractal structures , cutting slots of different shapes and sizes on radiating patch , constructing electromagnetic bandgap structure , adding stubs or parasitic elements , using defected/reformed ground plane and so on. The recently published literatures have suggested various method to widening the operating bandwidth of antennas, like adding extra resonators , using meandered strips , applying aperture coupled feed , using thick dielectric substrate , modifying the ground plane , and so forth. To overcome the limitations and meet the growing demands of multiband functionality, a suitable microstrip patch antenna of simple geometrical structure with reduced dimension and light weight has to be designed by exploiting the potentialities of latest technology.…”
