Advances in flexible integrated circuit technology and piezoelectric materials allow high-quality stretchable piezoelectric transducers to be built in a form that is easy to integrate with the body’s soft, curved, and time-dynamic surfaces. The resulting capabilities create new opportunities for studying disease states, monitoring health/wellness, building human–machine interfaces, and performing other operations. However, more widespread application scenarios are placing new demands on the high flexibility and small size of the array. This paper provides a 8 × 8 two-dimensional flexible ultrasonic array (2D-FUA) based on laser micromachining; a novel single-layer “island bridge” structure was used to design flexible array and piezoelectric array elements to improve the imaging capability on complex surfaces. The mechanical and acoustoelectric properties of the array are characterized, and a novel laser scanning and positioning method is introduced to solve the problem of array element displacement after deformation of the 2D-FUA. Finally, a multi-modal localization imaging experiment was carried out on the multi-target steel pin on the plane and curved surface based on the Verasonics system. The results show that the laser scanning method has the ability to assist the rapid imaging of flexible arrays on surfaces with complex shapes, and that 2D-FUA has wide application potential in medical-assisted localization imaging.

Flexible ultrasound array with phased array configurations have individually controllable array element emission and reception acoustic properties, however array conventional processes and array design are too complex. It is necessary to explore rapid creation methods and potential ultrasound applications for flexible arrays. In this paper, we provide a method for rapid fabrication of flexible transducers based on laser micromachining and verify the performance of the line array by multi-mode positioning imaging under curved surfaces. The proposed single-layered and double-sided conductive stretchable electrode configuration eliminated the blockage of acoustic waves,and 'island bridge' structures are compatible with array flexibility and array excitation for row addressing.The mechanical, acoustic and electrical interconnections of the array are verified.Based on the Verasonics system, the ultrasonic line array scans multiple steel column targets in multiple modalities under curved surfaces for imaging and localization.The results show that the ultrasonic line array can obtain clear visual localization images in A-scan, B-scan and E-scan poses.In addition, the artifacts in the images can be effectively suppressed by adjusting the depth of focus of E-scan and optimizing the sparse line array structure. It is verified that laser micromachining for rapid creation of flexible ultrasonic line array has potential applications in the field of localization imaging.

Conformable electronics are regarded as the next generation of personal healthcare monitoring and remote diagnosis devices. In recent years, piezoelectric based conformable ultrasound electronics (cUSE) have been intensively studied due to their unique capabilities, including no‐radiative monitoring, soft tissue imaging, deep signal decoding, wireless power transfer, portability, and compatibility. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of cUSE for use in biomedical and healthcare monitoring systems and a summary of their recent advancements. Following an introduction to the fundamentals of piezoelectrics and ultrasound transducers, the critical parameters for transducer design are discussed. Next, five types of cUSE with their advantages and limitations are highlighted, and the fabrication of cUSE using advanced technologies is discussed. In addition, the working function, acoustic performance, and accomplishments in various applications are thoroughly summarized. We note that application considerations must be given to the tradeoffs between material selection, manufacturing processes, acoustic performance, mechanical integrity, and the entire integrated system. Finally, we highlight current challenges and directions for the development of cUSE, and provide research flow as the roadmap for future research. In conclusion, these advances in the fields of piezoelectric materials, ultrasound transducers, and conformable electronics spark an emerging era of biomedicine and personal healthcare.This article is protected by copyright.
