Design and Manufacturing of the Multi-Layered Metamaterial Plate with Interfacial Crack-like Voids and Experimental-Theoretical Study of the Guided Wave Propagation

Abstract: A novel kind of acoustic metamaterials (AMMs) with unit cells composed of two layers made of dissimilar materials with a crack-like void situated at the interface between bars is considered. Recently, the authors showed numerically that this novel kind of AMMs can provide unidirectional propagation of guided waves. Several AMM specimens (the finite stack of periodic elastic layers with and without voids) have been manufactured using additive manufacturing techniques and regular gluing. The details of the manuf… Show more

“…In addition, the EBSCs and can be employed for modelling partially closed delaminations in carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites made of anisotropic/orthotropic layers, which have increasingly become the material of choice for design of the main load carrying components in advanced structures over recent decades. An experimental validation of the theoretical results presented in this study could be provided using the fabrication techniques employed in [ 13 , 69 ] to manufacture laminates with damaged interfaces.…”

“…The results of the numerical analysis show good accuracy and convergence rate of the proposed method. The authors believe that the proposed advanced BIEM will be further employed for experimental and theoretical studies of wave propagation in acoustic metamaterials with doubly periodic arrays of crack-like voids, see, e.g., [11].…”

“…One of the simplest double-negative acoustic material is a dispersive composite in the form of an elastic porous medium with empty spherical cavities [6]. The similar idea has been recently proposed in [7] investigating crack-like inhomogeneities or voids in a multilayer structure.…”
