We study the application of the magic-sets transformation technique to Datalog c (function-free programs with negation) that may not have two-valued well-founded models. In this general setting, the wellfounded model of the original program does not always agree with the well-founded model of the magic program derived by commonly used left-to-right sideways information-passing strategies on the query. In order to correct this disagreement we present a novel method that is obtained by slightly and naturally tailoring Van Gelder's alternating fixpoint technique to any magic program. ]

Deductive databases result from the integration of relational database and logic programming techniques. However, significant problems remain inherent in this simple synthesis from the language point of view. In this paper, we discuss these problems from four different aspects: complex values, object orientation, higherorderness, and updates. In each case, we examine four typical languages that address the corresponding issues.

Abstract.We describe the design and implementation of the Glue-Nail deductive database system. Nail is a purely declarative query language; Glue is a procedural language used for non-query activities. The two languages combined are sufficient to write a complete application. Nail and Glue code are both compiled into the target language IGlue. The Nail compiler uses variants of the magic sets algorithm and supports well-founded models. The Glue compiler's static optimizer uses peephole techniques and data flow analysis to improve code. The IGlue interpreter features a run-time adaptive optimizer that reoptimizes queries and automatically selects indexes. We also describe the Glue-Nail benchmark suite, a set of applications developed to evaluate the Glue-Nail language and to measure the performance of the system.
