Design and Implementation of Safety Management System for Oil Depot Based on Internet of Things

Abstract: An oil depot, which is used for accepting, storing and distributing oil, is accident-prone because of the flammability and explosibility characteristics of oil. As research shown most accidents in oil depots are caused by unsafe acts of human. But it is difficult to monitor and trace the operations of employees with traditional management methods. An internet of things based safety management information system for oil depot is introduced in this paper. It has the following unique characteristics: (1) It adopt… Show more

“…Various IoT-based safety protocols are efficiently implemented in the petrochemical industry, as discussed by the authors of reference [ 11 ] and the references therein. Du et al, proposed an IoT-based real-time monitoring solution for the presence of toxic gas in an oil depository via a GSM platform [ 12 ]. An online fault diagnosis model for the process industry is presented by the authors of reference [ 13 ] that includes multiple information collection and knowledge sharing points using IoT.…”

“…In the petrochemical industry, safety has always been a topic that cannot be ignored [1][2][3][4].With the increase in energy demand, the petrochemical industry's storage of flammable and explosive products has become larger and larger, and the capacity of a large oil depot can reach several million cubic meters. According to the analysis of 242 industrial equipment storage tank accidents in the past 40 years, 74% of accidents occurred in refineries, oil terminals or oil storage depots, and fires and explosions accounted for 85% of accidents [5].Because the stored light crude oil is flammable, explosive and volatile, fire and explosion accidents are one of the main reasons for the high risk of large oil depots [6].Since the Chicago Bridge Iron Company (CB&I) first demonstration in 1923, floating roof storage tanks have been the most widely used storage method for volatile petroleum products [7].The floating roof tank uses a floating roof that floats on the liquid surface of the oil tank as the oil rises and falls.…”

“…However, the safety form of China's building industry is not optimistic. According to the statistics of safety accidents in the industrial, mining and trading industries of China in 2015, there were 175 large safety accidents in the whole year, and the death toll of 36 large safety accidents in the building industry reaches 143, which is the most among industries [2]. The safety production of building construction not only relates to the safety of people's property and life, but also affects the harmonious stability of society [3].…”
