Purpose -The purpose of the paper is to conduct an exploratory study that proposes a personalized knowledge integration platform for digital libraries which can provide users with personalized information and knowledge services. Design/methodology/approach -A prototype system (PIKIP DL ) is designed and developed with two types of service, i.e. personalized information/knowledge service and personalized subject category service. Evaluation of the PIKIP DL by domain specialists and software experts is conducted. Comments are implications are addressed. Findings -The main findings include the following: the proposed system can help suggest materials that readers are interested in for DL; the proposed system can help construct knowledge contents in a hierarchical structure; and a common recommendation concerning knowledge structure from the reviewers is that the proposed system should add a self-organizing knowledge map function that would allow users to view knowledge subjects in a graphic manner. Practical implications -The results from the evaluation of reviewers revealed that the proposed PIKIP DL is acceptable to the integration of both personalized information service and personalized knowledge subject service. This implies that librarians and DL software agents should place emphasis on integrated service development to attract the attention of their users. Towards this goal, they could explain that personalized services (e.g. material recommendation, message recommendation, knowledge subject materials) with a mechanism of multi-resource integration can help provide DL resources according to users' needs and wants, and in consequence to enhance DL service efficacy. Originality/value -The research describes the importance of information/knowledge integration with respect to its support on the learning and study methods of users, and has developed a personalized knowledge integration platform as a mechanism that provides a personalized information service and a personalized knowledge subject category service. By employing Apriori algorithm and association rules as the data mining mechanism, personalized information recommendations are derived from circulation data, and a knowledge subject category is integrated from online sharing knowledge by participants.

Intelligent Library and Tutoring System for Brita in PuBs Project (ILTS-BPP) developed by the authors have the ability to personalize, maximum-reuse, index, analyze and integrate valuable information and knowledge from a wide selection of existing sources in all building life cycle stages. A number of tightly integrated search components (text search, audio search and video search) can be used. Such search possibilities ensure that stakeholders from construction and real estate industry can take advantage of quickly retrieving the most relevant information from the available content that has already been developed and approved for different manuals, handbooks, directives, research, normative documents, databases of best practice and other sources. We suppose that the intelligent libraries and tutoring systems will become a practical knowledge storehouse and will offer intelligent opportunities for learners in construction and real estate industry. The library of e-learning modules is individualized, can operate in distributed universities and institutions and can provide learners withdifferent forms of content.

Based on the theory of system dynamics, this article analyses the system composition of a university library intelligent knowledge service (IKS) and its relevant functions. First, we designed a system dynamics model involved the steps and flow of system modelling, the analysis and frame diagram, the system boundaries and their settings, and the system causality model. Furthermore, the system simulation of the IKS is carried out with result analysis, validity test and application analysis. The system simulation results show that (1) the model can simulate the system operation processes of a university library IKS, (2) the model reveals the relationships and the operation trends among the elements of the IKS and (3) the effective implementation of a library IKS can be improved by following the essential law of service development, paying attention to the coordination and interaction among constituent elements, and influencing measures around key variables.
