Design and implementation of constant wind speed turbine emulator using Matlab/Simulink and FPGA

Abstract: In this paper we present the interests of the hardware implementation of control algorithms for constant wind speed turbine emulator based on DCMachine. This system includes wind speed profile, mathematical model of a horizontal axis wind turbine, a separately excited DC-Machine and a fourth quadrant chopper. Modeling, simulation and implementation are realized in Matlab/Simulink environments. Unlike other works developed in this regards and through the tool XSG, algorithms will be implemented directly on FPGA… Show more

“…The complexity of the calculations is naturally related to the number of coefficients used in the model. Four polynomials cases have been proposed by different authors, as well as a particular case that was developed in this paper [43][44][45][46]. Table 3 shows the proposed coefficients, and Fig 5. the curves.…”

“…Previous studies have reviewed the estimation of wind speed based control on wind turbines, based on polynomial estimation, neural network estimation and nonlinear estimations with Newton Raphson [65]. Other studies have presented an overview of general aspects related to WECS as an introduction that provides general information to the readers [14], and of exponential, sinusoidal and algebraic representations for power coefficient [17,20,43,44], failing to include estimators by state observers and own proposals for modeling Cp.…”

“…The wind, considered as the wind turbine emulator input, could be constant, by level or sinusoidal profile and introduced into a software environment through mathematical modelling [16–18]. As the wind turbine system is complicated including aerodynamic, mechanical and electrical aspects, the wind emulator takes into consideration the phenomena relating to each aspect such as tower shadow, yaw error, mechanical stress, inertia of the turbine and power quality [19, 20].…”

“…To overcome these difficulties, wind turbine emulators have developed and validated the response of real hardware using advanced perturbation methods [37]. It has also been designed to facilitate tests on wind energy systems under several wind speed conditions for feasibility and performance analysis of a wind emulator [38][39][40]. The SRC emulation is a strategy to produce the ac ripple current perturbation into dc charging current and streamline the testing process, ensuring considerable savings in designed time and cost before implementing in an actual battery charger.…”
