Design and Implementation of an Impulse Commutated Solid-State Transfer Switch

Abstract: An impulse-commutated solid-state transfer switch (ICSTS) with a resonant commutation circuit is proposed. The thyristor-based solid-state transfer switch (STS) can utilize the dual power feeders to protect sensitive loads against voltage sags. Compared to gate-turn-off thyristors (GTOs), thyristors are favored for this application due to the lower conduction losses even though they can not self-commutate. For the conventional STS, the transfer process, which includes the detection of voltage sag and the thyri… Show more

“…The synchronous reference frame transformation (SFR) is applied so that the positive sequence of primary feeder voltage can be determined. This is applicable to detect the voltage sag [46][47][48][49]. The voltage sag can be detected by this detection scheme according to the magnitude of the positive sequence variable.…”

“…1, the simplified control diagram of the proposed system consists of the voltage sag detector, the flux estimator and the thyristor gating logic. To detect the voltage sag, the synchronous reference frame transformation (SFR) is applied to calculate the positive sequence component of the primary feeder voltage (6) . This detection scheme can identify the voltage sag according to the magnitude of the positive sequence component.…”

“…The traditional switch can switch the fault power to the standby power to solve the problem of the power interruption. At present, most of the medium and high‐voltage systems adopt mechanical automatic switch, which is not ideal due to its inherent characteristics [6–8], switching speed and transient characteristics are not very ideal, switch action time is too long, it often takes tens of seconds. Part of the vacuum or oil switch also need 0.1 s–0.2 s to act, that is, 5 to 10 cycles, cannot meet the requirements of sensitive load [9, 10].…”
