Design and host-involved in situ fabrication of La4NiLiO8 coating on Ni-rich cathode materials towards superior structural stability

Abstract: A La4NiLiO8-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode was synthesized by solid-phase sintering, with Ni ions from the host material involved in La4NiLiO8 formation. This strengthened the bonding between the coating and host cathode, and improved the cathode's structural stability.

“…34 The ratio of Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ can be used to illustrate the integrity of layered structures. 35,36 The low ratios of Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ of NMC@LTMP2 (0.14) and pristine NMC (0.18) indicate a complete layered structure for both samples. As shown in Fig.…”

“…Instead of it we expected utilization of lithium residual compounds on NCM surface. [36,39,41,65] Based on target content of coating compound in NCM substrate material -1 % by weight -we mixed appropriate amounts of La-and Ni-salts. Nevertheless, it is clear that only 0.7 % of LNP-coating was reached (Table 1).…”

“…[35,36] Modification of layered oxide cathode materials by La 2 (Li 0.5 Ni 0.5 )O 4 and the reasons of capacity fading were presented in many literature sources. [36][37][38][39][40][41][42] The improved performance of LNP-coated cathodes is attributed to the enhancement of structural stability resulting from increased conductive properties (both electronic and ionic transport) of modified electrodes.…”

“…22 Nevertheless, the bonding strength of the two phases will directly affect the stability and durability of the interface, which is the key to determining the coating effect. 23 Except for providing suitable tunnels for the fast transport of Li + , 21 coating materials should possess metal ions with a similar size as those in LMNO, for the reason that only such metal ions could possibly enter the surface crystal structure of LMNO to build a bridge connecting the coating layer with the interior substrate 24 and to synchronously affect the valence bond structure of the substrate by the traces heterogeneity doping. 9 Only the coating material selected according to this principle can effectively resist the external corrosion from the electrolyte and stabilize the substrate structure inside.…”
