The electronic power transformer has many advantages, such as reactive power compensation, voltage regulation, harmonic suppression, and power factor correction. When a three-phase electronic power transformer with a star configuration is applied in the distribution network, three-phase load unbalance will cause three-phase DC voltage unbalance if the electronic power transformer controller generates improper asymmetric voltage signals, which may trigger over-voltage protection. The effects of three-phase load unbalance to the work condition of the electronic power transformer are analyzed, and a control algorithm is proposed to balance three-phase DC voltages in this article. Meanwhile, input stage control, isolation stage control, output stage control, and individual DC voltage balancing control are presented. Simulation and lab experimental results show that the electronic power transformer still works properly even under serious unbalanced load conditions.

Abstract-Due to the possibility to drastically reduce the Solid State Transformer (SST) volume and weight, its use is becoming a reality in traction and wind power plant applications, while, in the electric distribution system, it is still considered futuristic. A SST, with managerial role in the electric distribution grid, is generally called Smart Transformer (ST). Unfortunately the low efficiency, the low reliability and the high cost still act as barriers for its widespread use in the real world. This paper focuses on the impact of a modular design, by benchmarking different ST topologies. Moreover, the paper provides guidelines on how to choose the semiconductor modules and assessments on how the choice affects the efficiency of the ST.

Abstract-Due to much higher achievable blocking voltage and faster switching speed, power devices based on wide bandgap (WBG) silicon carbide (SiC) material are ideal for medium voltage (MV) power electronics applications. For example, a 15 kV SiC MOSFET allows a simple and efficient two-level converter configuration for a 7.2 kV solid state transformer (SST) for smart grid applications. Compared with multilevel input series and output parallel (ISOP) solution, this approach offers higher efficiency and reliability, reduced system weight and cost by operating at medium to high switching frequency. However, the main concern is how to precisely implement this device in different MV applications, achieving highest switching frequency while maintaining good thermal performance. This paper reviews the characteristics of 15 kV SiC MOSFET and offers a comprehensive guideline of implementing this device in practical MV power conversion scenarios such as AC-DC, DC-DC and AC-AC in terms of topology selection, loss optimization and thermal management.Index Terms-15 kV SiC MOSFET, efficiency, medium voltage, medium voltage power electronics, reliability, solid state transformer, smart transformer.
