Design and First Results of an UAV-Borne L-Band Radiometer for Multiple Monitoring Purposes

Abstract: UAV (unmanned Aerial Vehicle) platforms represent a challenging opportunity for the deployment of a number of remote sensors. These vehicles are a cost-effective option in front of manned aerial vehicles (planes and helicopters), are easy to deploy due to the short runways needed, and they allow users to meet the critical requirements of the spatial and temporal resolutions imposed by the instruments. L-band radiometers are an interesting option for obtaining soil moisture maps over local areas with relatively… Show more

“…This importance can also be observed in cultural heritage and archaeological sciences (e.g., [15][16][17]). Monitoring purposes with UAV-based data [18] and habitat mapping approaches from aerial orthoimages [19] have also been realized. The growing number of UAV case-study publications is accompanied by an increase of studies which focus on the technical and methodological aspects of using autonomously flying, unmanned platforms.…”

“…With the recent development of low-cost compact imaging spectrometers and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a UAV-based hyperspectral imaging system could overcome scheduling and acquisition limitations as well as open new areas of research by providing an on-demand platform that can rapidly collect data and stay on station for hours [15,16]. However, these low-cost hyperspectral systems require radiometric and geometric calibration to allow quantitative scientific analysis [17,18].…”

“…The constant increase of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research programs and relative technologies have allowed to implement systems able to satisfy the requested features so far particularly for surveillance and monitoring operations [16], but many efforts are still needed to develop such systems for civil applications [17], especially in the field of hi-resolution image processing [18] and multimedia services, which represent the main target of this work.…”
