Design and fabrication of periodic lattice-based cellular structures

Abstract: A methodology, which consists of design, optimization and evaluation of periodic lattice-based cellular structures fabricated by additive manufacturing, is presented. A user-friendly design framework for lattice cellular structures is developed by using a size optimization algorithm. A 3D modeling process for the lattice-based cellular structures is introduced for non-linear finite element analysis and production. The approach is demonstrated on compression block with periodic lattice-based unit cells. First, … Show more

“…Fortunately, FEA has been successfully used for the prediction of mechanical properties of AM polymeric and composite scaffolds [28,29]. However, some unit cells are so complex that besides taking up too much design space, their FEA models are also difficult to build and modify.…”

“…The configuration of each unit cell structure will be created and stored in a library. The configuration of unit cells is mentioned in (Karamooz Ravari et al, 2014;Gorguluarslan et al, 2016). The model of unit cell structure is created in any CAD environment where a product designer needs to design the model of a product.…”

“…For example, the aerospace industry employs this technology because of the capabilities to manufacture light weight parts with lattice structures [1]. Lattice structures defined as a continuously repeating unit cell that connects to each other in three dimensions which typically created using a truss design [2][3]. Truss design is a structure that contains a core that is fully opened in all directions and it was classified into three groups; pyramidal structures, tetrahedral structures and collinear structures [4] as shown in Figure 1.…”
