Design and Fabrication of a Disposable Dental Handpiece for Clinical Use of a New Laser-Based Therapy-Monitoring System

Abstract: Dental caries, the breakdown of tooth enamel by bacteria infection that causes cavities in the enamel, is the most common chronic disease in individuals 6–19 years of age in the U.S. Optical detection of caries has been shown to be sensitive to the presence of bacteria and the resulting demineralization of enamel. The scanning fiber endoscope (SFE) is a miniature camera system that can detect early stages of caries by performing high-quality imaging and laser fluorescence spectroscopy with 405 nm excitation. “…A new device was also proposed by Dikici et al [98] to perform a particular gynecological surgery during which the uterus is removed with a laparoscopic approach. The AM technology was used by Rugg et al [96] to fabricate a tailored handpiece to hold the scanning fiber endoscope, a particular instrument used to acquire dental images without using X-ray.…”

“…Ten of these articles estimated the incurred cost. Some of them considered only the price of the material [41,48,54,96], some others carried out a complete evaluation of the expenses considering the material, cost of printer, payment of an expert for the design process, duration of printing, and post-processing [58]. Walker et al emphasized the advantage of using the AM technology to avoid unnecessary sterilization cycles of ultrasounds probes [57].…”

“…Current 1200–1800‐nm NIR imaging requires InGaAs‐based pixel‐array cameras which are bulky and expensive . With a diameter of less than 2 mm, the nirSFE can be placed within a hand instrument for pediatric dentistry , and capture images in multiple perspectives around a tooth for better lesion detection.…”

“…Thus, real-time video has greater potential in detecting lesions and distinguishing them in presence of specular reflection. 2 mm, the nirSFE can be placed within a hand instrument for pediatric dentistry [20], and capture images in multiple perspectives around a tooth for better lesion detection.…”
