Design and Execution of a Successful Well Kill on the World's Longest-Running Blow-out

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractThis paper reviews the history of the world's largest running blowout as well as the integrated engineering based approach taken to define the blow-out mechanism and to ultimately kill and abandon the wells.During 1916 cable tool drilling operations, Peace River Oils No.1 encountered an uncontrolled flow of salt water and gas at 345 m depth. The flow was estimated at over 30,000 bbls/d, ultimately the rig collapsed into the sinkhole and temporarily killed the… Show more

“…The process for rectifying well blowouts is dynamic and site-specific, with a number of methods available. Prior to mechanical repair of the well it is necessary to kill (i.e., hydraulically control) the well by injecting high density fluids at a rapid enough rate downhole to increase hydraulic head and well-friction, stopping of blowing fluid [21,26].…”

“…Information of serious SCVF/GM flows, saline water flows and liquid hydrocarbon flows at wells located in or near river valleys has been anecdotally reported, and in some cases well documented, as in the case of a well in the valley of Peace River in Alberta that discharged brine and natural gas for decades 7 . River valleys may facilitate gas migration and surface casing vent flow due to the removal of overburden.…”
