Design and evaluation of smart wearable undergarment for monitoring physiological extremes in firefighting

Abstract: For workers in extreme environments, such as firefighters, thermal protective clothing is essential to protect them from exposures to high heat and life threatening risks. This study will investigate the design of a new smart protective clothing system, which incorporates sensors in the undergarment to measure physiological data, such as skin temperature, heat flux and heat rate to assess the thermal status of the worker. The aim of this paper is to outline the design of the smart wearable undergarment and the… Show more

“…Secondly, the development of interactive clothing lacks the guidance of a theoretical system model, and clothing designers engaged in art design do not know how to use sensor technology to achieve the automatic interaction effect of clothing to trigger the communication desire of autistic patients. Current researchers seldom dabble in the systematic research of smart clothing from information modeling to humanistic evaluation, and most of them analyze the information technology application or humanistic design respectively from a single academic background [15][16][17][18][19], which may lead their inability to systematically explain the principle and process of how to extract data as well as transform and form a humanistic feeling of the interactive clothing.…”

“…The first group has focused on designing wearables that can measure physiological parameters that are relevant for heat-related injuries. The focus of such research is in providing a wearable infrastructure that can measure and transmit certain biometrics without further analysis of the data [5,8,9].…”

“…Therefore, the design of smart or intelligent protective clothing system is vital to be able to record physiological data, health and safety such as heart rate or location of the fire fighters without changing its characteristics of flexibility and comfort (Salim et al 2014). A number of studies investigated the application of wearable sensors under protective clothing; however the enhancement is required to monitor all the vital parameters for firefighters (McLellan and Daanen 2012).…”

“…As soon as the heart rate and skin temperature increase above the safety threshold, the warning signal will alert the worker, either by vibration, visual or audible signals. Wearable Advanced Sensor Platform is another wearable tracking device, which can track firefighters' location and physical activity (Globe 2014;Salim et al 2014).…”
