Design and evaluation of moringa gum-based hydrogel dressings for cutaneous wound healing

Yasir Iqbal,
Shahzad Ali Shahid Chatha,
Zunera Chauhdary
et al.

Abstract: The study aimed to evaluate moringa gum (MG) and carboxymethyl moringa (CMG) for their possible use in hydrogel-based dressings to treat cutaneous wounds. Initially, MG was characterized for its physical, functional, morphological, and thermal properties. The MG and CMG have shown limited toxicity as indicated by hemolytic assay where values were less than 2.5%. Furthermore, these samples also showed antimicrobial potential. The antioxidant potential of MG was slightly greater than its carboxymethyl derivative… Show more

“…The CAM hydrogel has scavenging ability ranging from 33.68 ± 1.82% to 82.06 ± 1.39% in a dose dependent manner (figure 10). It can be inferred from the results that chitosan alone has least radical scavenging activity but in case of CAM hydrogel as it is the combination of chitosan , silver and moringa gum, the constituents may have contributed to the antioxidant activity and hence resulted in the enhanced antioxidant activity as the radical scavenging activity of moringa gum was found 84.84 ± 0.65% at 1 mg ml −1 in our previous study [27]. Reactive oxygen species, or ROS, are thought to be the main trigger of inflammation during the healing of wounds.…”

“…Due to its excellent nutritional and phytochemical characteristics, this plant is occasionally referred to as the miracle plant. Its nutritious characteristics have led to its widespread cultivation in numerous places across the globe, mostly for its seeds, gum, leaves, and flowers [26,27]. The gum obtained from the Moringa Oleifera plant is a naturally occurring substance known as drumstick gum, moringa gum or Gond Sohanjna.…”
