It is a truism that today's simulations of mobile wireless networks are not realistic. In realistic simulations of urban networks, the mobility of vehicles and pedestrians is greatly influenced by the environment (e.g., the location of buildings) as well as by interaction with other nodes. For example, on a congested street or sidewalk, nodes cannot travel at their desired speed. Furthermore, the location of streets, sidewalks, hallways, etc. restricts the position of nodes, and traffic lights impact the flow of nodes. And finally, people do not wander the simulated region at random, rather, their mobility depends on whether the person is at work, at lunch, etc. In this paper, realistic simulation of mobility for urban wireless networks is addressed. In contrast to most other mobility modeling efforts, most of the aspects of the presented mobility model and model parameters are derived from surveys from urban planning and traffic engineering research. The mobility model discussed here is part of the UDel Models, a suite of tools for realistic simulation of urban wireless networks. The UDel Models simulation tools are available online.

Abstract-In performance studies of vehicular ad hoc networks, the underlying mobility model plays a major role. In this paper, we investigate the influence of three mobility models on the performance of ad hoc network routing protocols (AODV and GPSR). As a benchmark, we use the popular random waypoint mobility model. Our second model is based on a vehicular traffic simulator that we proposed in earlier work. Finally, as third model, we propose a novel mobility model based on vectorized street maps and speed limit information extracted from a geographic information system. With the two considered routing protocols, the random waypoint mobility model tends to lead to substantially higher performance than with our own, presumably more realistic mobility models.

The extension of Internet services to public transport passengers is slowly becoming inevitable. Several architectures for providing Internet access to moving vehicles have been evaluated in the past. However, most of these studies have focused on using static gateways. In this paper, we study the feasibility of an architecture that involves deploying mobile gateways on a selected subset of public transport vehicles for providing Internet connectivity to the entire fleet. The vehicles organize as dynamic clusters and connect to the Internet by communicating with the gateways via multi-hop paths. We evaluate the underlying connectivity characteristics and the coverage achieved by employing an optimal gateway placement strategy. In our analysis, we use realistic movement patterns of public transport buses in a metropolitan city. We also propose a prediction based enhancement, which takes advantage of the known mobility patterns of the buses to improve the performance of the multi-hop routing protocols employed within each cluster.
