Design and Development of Photonic Biosensors for Swine Viral Diseases Detection

Abstract: In this paper we introduce a field diagnostic device based on the combination of advanced bio-sensing and photonics technologies, to tackle emerging and endemic viruses causing swine epidemics, and consequently significant economic damage in farms. The device is based on the use of microring resonators fabricated in silicon nitride with CMOS compatible techniques. In the paper, the designed and fabricated photonic integrated circuit (PIC) sensors are presented and characterized, showing an optimized performanc… Show more

“…Wave-length-interrogation is adopted to monitor the shifts that the notch resonance undergoes when the environment near the surface of the sensor changes. The biosensor Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) consists of eight ring resonators (RRs) [ 13 ], as shown in Figure 1 a. The whole PIC is covered by a SiO 2 layer (1000 nm width) to optimize the performance of the Grating Couplers (GC), and, in addition, as a protective layer.…”

“…A window is opened around the RRs to allow access for the functionalization of their surfaces and their exposure to the sample, as shown in Figure 1 b. The fabrication details of the developed PICs are further described in an authors’ previous work [ 13 ].…”

“…PICs were provided by Universitat Politècnica de València Nanophotonics and Technology Center and Lumensia Sensors S.L. and were fabricated and functionalized as previously described by Griol et al [ 30 ]. The dimensions of the microfluidic board of PICs were 7 × 3 cm, and the board was fabricated in cyclic olefin polymer (COP).…”

“…The author also performed the simulation studies, where the simulation results confirm the SPP's tighter spatial confinement and higher local field strength, which aids in detecting slight changes in the refractive index on the sensor surface. A field diagnostic system based on a combination of advanced bio-sensing and photonics technologies for the detection of swine virus was proposed by Griol et al [206]. The plan was focused on the use of CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) compatible microring resonators fabricated in silicon nitride.…”
