Design and Development of a Dual Operating Mode Microstrip Patch Antenna for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar

Abstract: Abstract-Microstrip patch antenna has been designed and developed for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle based Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR). This antenna operates in C-Band at the frequency of 5.3 GHz with a bandwidth of 80 MHz. The radiation patterns of the antenna were specified to provide a desired scanned area for UAVSAR. The UAVSAR antenna was designed in the form of combination of 3 subpanels to allow dual operating mode (single antenna or dual antenna) selection. Two feed points are provided to the feeding ne… Show more

“…Microstrip antennas currently perform an important function in modern communication systems, being present in a wide range of applications with emphasis on aircraft, satellites and mobile communications systems . The rise of the use for this type of antenna, which has been motivated by the miniaturization required since the beginning of the space race, can be justified by the easy shaping the planar and non‐planar surfaces, simple construction, low cost and versatility in terms of resonance frequency.…”

“…The microstrip antennas and their arrays have been widely applied in various fields with emphasis on their use in radar, mobile telephony, Global Position System, wireless network equipment, and more recently in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for civil and military use . This wide range of application of the microstrip antenna is due to its simplicity of manufacture process, compatibility with radio frequency planar circuit, small size, and unidirectional radiation capacity.…”
