Design and Control of a Magnetorheological Elastomer Dynamic Vibration Absorber for Powertrain Mount Systems of Automobiles

Abstract: The principle of a magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) is proposed and the corresponding configuration is designed in this paper. The MRE DVA is composed of a vibration absorbing unit and a passive vibration isolation unit. The vibration absorbing unit can be utilized to mitigate the kinetic energy acting on the primary system (i.e., the system of which the vibration will be mitigated) and the passive vibration isolation unit utilized to support the primary system. The vibration… Show more

“…MREs do not leak as MR fluids, the embedded ferrous particles do not settle down and MREs can tolerate large deformations in tension, compression and shear. These particular characteristics enable MREs to be potentially applied in vibration mitigation systems such as powertrain mount systems, aerospace equipment and naval vessel power systems, when serving as elastic elements of dynamic vibration absorbers [3][4][5] and isolating elements of vibration isolators [6][7][8].…”

“…Combining the characteristics of powertrain mount systems and the working conditions of MREs, the principle of the MRE-based DVA is proposed. The schematic and prototype of the MRE-based DVA are shown in Figure 2(a) (Bai et al, (2015b) and (b), respectively. As seen from Figure 2(a), the proposed MRE-based DVA is composed of a semi-active vibration absorbing unit and a passive vibration isolation unit.…”
