Design and construction of a large weighing lysimeter in an almond orchard

Abstract: Effective water management is essential to ensure the sustainability of irrigated agriculture. The accurate determination of crop water requirements is the first step in this task. This paper describes the building of a one-tree weighing lysimeter (3m x 3m and 2.15m depth) located in an almond orchard (Prunus dulcis “Guara”), inside the experimental farm “Alameda del Obispo” in Córdoba, Spain, to measure orchard evapotranspiration (ETc). Following a review on lysimetry, the description of the construction of t… Show more

“…The lysimeter method quantifies E T using weighing or drainage lysimeters. This is considered the most reliable method for small plants but has limits for tall trees because of large errors from wind when measuring in outdoor environments with high temporal resolution (Edwards, ; Lorite, Santos, Teti, & Fereres, ).…”

“…Lysimeters are usually considered difficult to handle, costly to build and their use and maintenance require special care, so their use is usually restricted to research centers [24,25]. Different weighing lysimeters have already been reported in the literature [26][27][28][29][30][31].…”
