A significant number of people depend on the help of others to facilitate their mobility in wheelchairs. Physical disabilities hinder the mobility of persons with disabilities, making them unable to move around using conventional (manually operated) wheelchairs. Furthermore, people lack the ability to regain an upright posture if the chair falls. This study aims to evaluate conventional and smart wheelchair technologies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This study was conducted through a quantitative and cross-sectional research methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of wheelchair technologies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is done by collecting data from wheelchair users, experts, and specialists in this field, such as medical engineers and others familiar with wheelchairs. The evaluation included the opinions of users and experts on the use of traditional and smart chairs in terms of the technologies used, ease of use, advantages, disadvantages, etc. More than 590 users and experts from all regions of the Kingdom participated in the study, and their answers were characterized by objectivity and realism. About 39% of participants indicated that smart wheelchairs are very effective, and 37.6% confirmed that these chairs can be used on many surfaces, while 23.4% expressed their appreciation that smart wheelchairs are useful for various purposes and terrains. On the other hand, the results showed that smart wheelchairs had high purchase and maintenance costs of 37.4%. This was followed by concerns about more maintenance requirements (23.5%), the need for constant charging (20.4%), and the need for users to be aware of energy use (18.7%). The results show some advantages of using traditional wheelchairs, such as low maintenance, lightweight, and often affordability. This type of chair faces many difficulties, such as crossing slopes and long distances, requiring some strength for use, and users needing assistance to move around. The study revealed significant progress in wheelchair technology, especially in smartphones and navigation. Evaluating existing wheelchair technology in Saudi Arabia has shown significant advances, especially in urban areas and healthcare institutions. Motorized electric wheelchairs are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to enhance users’ mobility. However, the availability of high-end wheelchair models and their accompanying accessories remains limited.

The last decade has witnessed extensive research in the field of healthcare services and their technological upgradation. To be more specific, the Internet of Things (IoT) has shown potential application in connecting various medical devices, sensors, and healthcare professionals to provide quality medical services in a remote location. This has improved patient safety, reduced healthcare costs, enhanced the accessibility of healthcare services, and increased operational efficiency in the healthcare industry. The current study gives an up-to-date summary of the potential healthcare applications of IoT- (HIoT-) based technologies. Herein, the advancement of the application of the HIoT has been reported from the perspective of enabling technologies, healthcare services, and applications in solving various healthcare issues. Moreover, potential challenges and issues in the HIoT system are also discussed. In sum, the current study provides a comprehensive source of information regarding the different fields of application of HIoT intending to help future researchers, who have the interest to work and make advancements in the field to gain insight into the topic.

With the increasing elderly population, the information intellectualization demand also rises substantially. At the same time, intelligent information interaction system- (IIIS-) controlled wheelchair’s automatic obstacle avoidance techniques have become extremely important in an intelligent social context. Therefore, this paper proposes an IIIS to help disabled groups and some older people enjoy the barrier-free information design and improve product information manipulation experience. Firstly, the functional requirements of the IIIS are analyzed, and the overall scheme of the IIIS is designed. Then, the control mode of IIIS is determined. Secondly, following research on the obstacle avoidance algorithm (OAA) based on fuzzy control, the obstacle avoidance control strategy is formulated for the elderly accessible wheelchair IIIS. Finally, experiments are designed to verify the control performance and simulate the automatic OAA of the designed IIIS. The experimental results indicate that the touch screen control system (TSCS) of mobile phone (MPHN) is more sensitive for the elderly accessible wheelchair control information system. By comparison, the joystick control system (JCS) is more straightforward to manipulate than the touch screen. The practicability of these two control methods is very strong. These two independent control methods meet the control performance requirements and improve the automatic obstacle avoidance performance of IIIS. The proposed IIIS based on TSCS and JSC can respond to input commands in real time, help the IIIS avoid obstacles, and acquire images, among other functions. Therefore, the proposed intelligent wheelchair design improves the interactive performance of the intelligent operating system, facilitates the travel of the elderly and the disabled, and has good practical value.
