Design and biomechanical study of slide-poking external fixator for hip fracture

Abstract: Background Femoral head collapse and coxa vara lead to internal fixator failure in elderly patients with hip fracture. External fixator application is an optimal choice; however, the existing methods have many disadvantages. Methods Type 31-A1.3 hip fracture models were developed in nine pairs of 1-year-old fresh bovine corpse femur specimens. Each left femur specimen was fixed by a dynamic hip screw (control group), and each right femur specimen was fixed by the slide-poking external fixator (experimental gro… Show more

“…Effective fixation is the basis for enhancing the stability of the broken end after debridement, which is conducive to promoting bone repair. For patients with severe bone infection, there will often be poor soft tissue coverage conditions, and the effect of internal fixation will be affected [ 11 , 12 ]. Therefore, the external fixator can be used to fix the patient, which is conducive to the treatment of bone infection.…”

“…The best fixation device for reversibly inclined intertrochanteric fractures is an internal fixation device that can resist the tendency of proximal fracture to transition, rotation, and varus (8). Intramedullary fixation has gradually replaced dynamic hip screw (DHS) for its advantages of strong stability, simple operation, less damage and less bleeding.…”
