Design and application of neutral carrier-based ion-selective electrodes. Plenary lecture

Abstract: The requirements for neutral complexing agents behaving as ion carriers (ionophores) in membranes of ion-selective electrodes are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the lipophilicity of such compounds, on the kinetics (free energy of activation) of the ligand exchange reaction, and on the parameters inducing selectivity, e.g., molecular structures and aspects of membrane technology.

“…Ionized calcium measurement in a solution may be performed by several methods based on different analytical principles: the biological "frog heart" method (1), spectrophotometry with calcium indicators (2)(3)(4)(5), and potentiometry with calcium ion-selective electrodes (ISE) (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14) which respond to changes in thermodynamic activity of calcium ions. For ionized calcium measurement in plasma, potentiometry is the method of choice for the reference method.…”

“…The response slopes typical for monovalent and divalent ions as well as intermediate slopes were observed, which complicates significantly the interpretation of selectivity coefficients. Some neutralcarrier based lead ion selective electrodes were based on oxa-or dioxadicarboxylic acid diamides, [34][35][36][37] and exhibited nearly Nernstian responses to PbA + (where A is Cl -, OH -, Ac -or NO 3-).…”

“…These compounds also play an important role as carriers for alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions in ionselective electrodes (23)(24)(25)(26). In recent years, this field of application has been opened up by Simon and co-workers specially for the structure type of the polyfunctional podands with ether diamide structure (27,28). The authors have shown that such non cyclic amide-functionalized ionophores are equal and superior, EXTRACTION OF STRONTIUM WITH AMID0 PODANDS 437 respectively, to macrocyclic compounds such as crown compounds and cryptands with regard to selectivity towards alkaline-earth ions (29,30).…”
