“…The mean dry‐filter blank was 8.1 μ g C with a coefficient of variation of 26% (n = 32). The difference between the dry‐filter blank and the average blank can be assigned to adsorbed DOC, 10.9 μ g C. Previously published values are similar to ours, i.e., 20–25 μ g C for 0.8 μ m silver filters [ Menzel , 1966], 24 μ g for GF/F filters [ Moran et al , 1999], 21 μ g C for Pall glass fiber type A/E filters with a correction for filter area [ Holser et al , 2011]. Moran et al [1999], based on their own work and that of Menzel, suggest that DOC adsorption is dependent on the number of adsorption sites on the filter; some of the variability among different studies may be due to different filter types or manufacturing lots [ Stramski et al , 2008], and hence a variable number of adsorption sites per filter.…”
