Design and Analysis of a Novel Piezoceramic Stack-based Smart Aggregate

Abstract: A novel piezoceramic stack-based smart aggregate (PiSSA) with piezoceramic wafers in series or parallel connection is developed to increase the efficiency and output performance over the conventional smart aggregate with only one piezoelectric patch. Due to the improvement, PiSSA is suitable for situations where the stress waves easily attenuate. In PiSSA, the piezoelectric wafers are electrically connected in series or parallel, and three types of piezoelectric wafers with different electrode patterns are des… Show more

“…The sizes of two plates are 400 mm × 250 mm × 1.5 mm and 400 mm × 200 mm × 1.5 mm, respectively. As illustrated in figure 3, two PZTs are also fixed on the two plates by epoxy glue for the excitation and reception of Lamb waves due to their excellent piezoelectric performance [48,49], wide bandwidth [50,51] and easy installment [52]. It should be noted that the location of the two PZT exciter and PZT receiver is selected randomly when the experiments are designed.…”

“…A new type of piezoelectric stack intelligent integrated transducer structure (PiSSA) was proposed, which used piezoelectric wafers connected in series or in parallel. Compared with the traditional single wafer, the efficiencies and output performances of the wafers were higher [31]. Meng et al [32] used the equivalent elastic method to obtain the radial and longitudinal electromechanical equivalent circuits of a sandwich transducer and derived the resonance frequency equation.…”

“…One direction involves expanding the detection dimensions from one dimension (smart aggregate, SA) [22] to two dimensions (tubular smart aggregate, TSA) [24], and eventually to three dimensions (spherical smart aggregate, SSA) [19,25]. The other direction aims to enhance the sensing range from a single piezoelectric layer [22] to piezoelectric stacks [26,27]. In addition to these two development paths, an important improvement to enhance future applicability is the transition from wired to wireless communication [28], although limited research has been conducted in this area.…”
