There are some disadvantages in the operating process of the basin solar seawater still (BSSS), such as long mass transfer distance, large heat indolence, huge floor space, and poor bearing pressure ability. A novel cone-type solar seawater still (CTSSS) is presented to overcome the weaknesses of the BSSS in this study. The CTSSS has the characteristics of seawater liquid film evaporation, short mass transfer distance, the condensation sleeve is parallel to and above the evaporation sleeve, and the condensation area is larger than the evaporation area. In order to clarify the performance of the CTSSS, the influence mechanism of feed seawater mass flow rate, heating power and heating temperature on the fresh water yield of the CTSSS was analyzed, the method of enhancing the mass transfer of the binary mixed gas in the CTSSS was explored, and the law of heat and mass transfer of the binary mixed gas in the annular enclosed small space was investigated. The results indicated that the maximum fresh water yield of the CTSSS is 62.7 g/20 min at the feed seawater mass flow rate of 400 g/h when the input power is 200 W, which is 4.5% higher than that when the feed seawater mass flow rate is 300 g/h. The performance ratio (PR) of the CTSSS is increased as the heating power, the PR of the CTSSS is 0.65 when 180 W heating power is employed. The steady state fresh water yield of the CTSSS with mirror condensation sleeve at 85°C is 84.6 g/20 min, which is 12.1% higher than that with non-mirror condensation sleeve Compared with the CTSSS with non-mirror condensation sleeve, the value of proportions of radiative heat transfer in the total heat transfer of the CTSSS with mirror condensation sleeve decreased by 6.6%, and the value of proportions of evaporative heat transfer increased by 6.4%. This study would provide a reference for small-scale decentralized application of solar desalination in remote areas.

Ensuring the uniformity of solar irradiance distribution on photovoltaic cells is a major challenge in low-concentrating photovoltaic systems based on a small-scale linear Fresnel reflector. A novel sawtooth V-cavity design method based on an optimization algorithm to achieve uniform irradiance distribution on photovoltaic cells is presented. The reliability of the design was verified using the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method and a laser experiment. A prototype was built using 3D printing technology with a biodegradable green polymer material known as polylactic acid. The new cavity was compared to the standard V-trough cavity, keeping the cavity aperture, reflective surface area, and photovoltaic cell width constant. In addition, the focal height, number of mirrors, mirror width, and mirror spacing were also kept constant; so, the cost of the two configurations was the same from the point of view of the primary reflector system. The new design ensured the uniform distribution of solar irradiation and significantly reduced the height of the cavity. The significant decrease in the height of the proposed cavity has the following advantages: (i) a decrease in the dimensions of the fixed structure of the small-scale linear Fresnel reflector, thus reducing its cost, (ii) a significant decrease in the surface area exposed to wind loads, thus reducing the cost of the fixed structure and secondary system structures, (iii) a reduction in the difficulty of the manufacture, maintenance, and transportation of the cavity’s reflecting walls, and (iv) an increase in the cooling surface area, which increases the electrical efficiency of the photovoltaic cells.

This study presents quantitative results of charging experiments conducted on cascaded thermal energy storage system (CTESS) integrated with external compound parabolic concentrator solar collector (XCPCSC). Increasing mass flow rate in 2‐stage CTESS integrated with XCPCSC resulted in a 30% reduction in initiation time of phase change materials (PCMs) during charging, with a higher mass flow rate of 0.025 kg/s. However, due to disparate melting point temperatures of PCMs, phase transition in the two‐stage CTESS did not occur simultaneously, leading to poor heat transfer rates within the CTESS. To address this, study extended number of phases from two to three, resulting in a 1.5‐fold increase in rate of heat transfer compared to 2‐stage PCM system. The simultaneous melting processes at various stages in the CTESS maximized energy absorption, leading to a 25% increase in system efficiency. Notably, the values of energy stored efficiency and over‐all efficiency reached their peak values of 95% and 60%, respectively, between t = 12.00 h and t = 13.00 h. This time period also saw a significant increase in collector efficiency to 72%. These quantitative findings highlight importance of mass flow rate and PCM arrangement in achieving efficient heat transfer and system performance in a CTESS integrated with XCPCSC.
