Design and 3D Printing of Hydrogel Scaffolds with Fractal Geometries

Abstract: Structures that exhibit fractal geometries are typically self-similar and iterative. Fractal patterns appear in nature as approximations of mathematical abstractions, yet exist as artifacts of specific processes having reached optimized conditions in the presence of various forces and movements. In this paper, we focus on 3D printing of fractal geometry using computer designed and user adjusted patterns. Various biocompatible hydrogel structures were printed from a photopolymerizable poly(ethylene glycol) dia… Show more

“…Namely, digital micro-mirror device projection printing (DMD-PP) is a stereolithographic method that uses an array of micro-mirrors to spatially modulate a pulsed UV laser, in order to achieve additive crosslinking patterns in a photo-curable material. [17,[39][40][41][42] Similarly, it can also be used for subtractive laser ablation within previously crosslinked layers of the material. An alternative approach is to 3D print a sacrificial mold (a.k.a.…”

“…The third method for 3D-bioprinting is Light-Based Bioprinting (LBB), also commonly referred to as laser-based bioprinting. LBB, which includes laser-assisted printing and stereolithography, configures as the fastest and most resolute method among all bioprinting strategies, with no limitations associated with the material viscosity [ 34 , 178 , 179 ].…”

“…[ 277,278 ] Compared to conventional maskless photolithography, projection‐based stereolithography (PSL) offers the advantages of increased throughput and complexity, and precise control over scaffold thickness and feature resolution. [ 279,280 ] As proof‐of‐concept, hydrogel‐encapsulated ECs were spatially positioned in single or multiple layers within defined geometries which resulted in correlated vascular geometries with a mature phenotype and cord‐like structures. [ 281 ] Cell‐laden hydrogels surrounded by multiple perfusable lumenized vascular channels have also been fabricated using this technique.…”
