Design Analysis and Experimental Evaluation of an MR Fluid Clutch

Abstract: An MRC (Magneto-Rheological Clutch), a device to transmit torque by shear stress of MR fluids, has the property that its power transmissibility changes quickly in response to control signal. In this study, we consider methods to predict performance of an MRC. First, we anticipate the performance of an MRC with a simplified mathematical model and second, we predict the performance in consideration of the applied magnetic field and viscosity distribution of fluids caused by the field. Between the two methods, co… Show more

“…One of the most recent and promising technologies in vehicle damper design is implementing Magnetorheogical (MR) fluids. These smart fluids have the capability to continuously and rapidly change their rheological behavior (viscosity) under applied magnetic field [1,2]. Due to these unique characteristics, MR based dampers can provide variable damping force semi-actively by varying the applied magnetic field (varying current), thus they have the capability to control vibration in a wide range of road conditions.…”

“…As a first stage of the development of the MR fluid clutch (MRFC), many researchers [7][8] have developed single disk-type (or single cylindrical) clutches as shown in Fig. 1 This material has developed to improve characteristics of the conventional MR fluids, for example, sedimentation of particles.…”

“…Such fluid exhibits unusual characteristics in that their rheological properties can be continuously and reversibly changed within milliseconds by solely applying or removing magnetic fields. This interesting property has inspired the design of a large variety of MR devices in various engineering applications such as MR valves [3,4], shock absorbers and dampers [5,6], and engine mounts and clutch systems [7,8].…”
