Desertification in the Sahel Region: A Product of Climate Change or Human Activities? A Case of Desert Encroachment Monitoring in North-Eastern Nigeria Using Remote Sensing Techniques

Abstract: Desertification has become one of the most pronounced ecological disasters, affecting arid and semi-arid areas of Nigeria. This phenomenon is more pronounced in the northern region, particularly the eleven frontline states of Nigeria, sharing borders with the Niger Republic. This has been attributed to a range of natural and anthropogenic factors. Rampant felling of trees for fuelwood, unsustainable agriculture, overgrazing, coupled with unfavourable climatic conditions are among the key factors that aggravate… Show more

“…The savanna vegetation of northern Nigeria is depauperate compared to the original forested vegetation of the southern part of the country because most areas in the NSZ are arid or semiarid (Sawa, et al 2015) or facing desertification and drought (Fabeku andFaleyimu 2017, Chukwudi andAdebowale 2018;Adejuwon and Olaniyan 2019;Ibrahim et al 2022). As a result of anthropogenic destruction, nearly all ancestral vegetation types in the NSZ have been cleared and modified, while rejuvenation is unlikely due to increasing adverse climatic conditions.…”
