This study evaluated feeding patterns and ontogenetic variations in a non-native fish species (Plagioscion squamosissimus) in an isolated lake in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. Quarterly samplings were performed from April 2005 to February 2006 using plankton nets to capture larvae, seining nets for juveniles, and gill nets and trammel for adults. Stomach contents (n = 378) were examined according to the volumetric method in which the volume of each food item was estimated using graduated test tubes or a glass counting plate. During early development (larval stage), P. squamosissimus consumed mainly Cladocera and Copepoda. Juveniles showed a more diverse diet, including shrimp (Macrobrachium amazonicum), fish, aquatic insects (Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Chironomidae and pupae of Diptera) and plants. It was notable the high proportion of cannibalism (23.3%) in this stage. Adults consumed predominantly shrimp and fish. The use of food resources varied significantly between development stages (ANOSIM; r = 0.458; p<0.005), showing changes in food preferences during ontogeny. The Similarity Percentage Analysis (SIMPER) indicated that Cladocera and Copepoda were responsible for the differences observed between the larval stages of pre-flexion, flexion and post-flexion. M. amazonicum and Chironomidae were responsible for the differences between juvenile and larval stages, while M. amazonicum and other fishes caused the differences between adults and other ontogenetic stages. These results are confirmed by the relationship between standard length and developmental periods (ANCOVA; r2 = 0.94; p<0.0001). In general, there were low values of trophic niche breadth. The essentially carnivorous habit from the early stages of P. squamosissimus and the predominant use of M. amazonicum by adults have important roles in feeding patterns of the species, suggesting a major contribution to its success and establishment, especially in lentic environments.

A alimentação de peixes e os padrões ecomorfológicos estão relacionados com vários fatores como ontogenia. O presente trabalho foi realizado a fim de testar a hipótese de que a dieta e os padrões ecomorfológicos apresentam correlações positivas entre os diferentes estágios de ontogenia de Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840), pois à medida que a espécie passa da fase jovem para adulta altera a sua alimentação e morfologia. A pescada foi escolhida por ser a espécie mais abundante no reservatório da Estação Ecológica de Tapacurá, Estado de Pernambuco. Os padrões ecomorfológicos foram avaliados e relacionados com a alimentação dos indivíduos capturados no reservatório no mês de abril de 2013. As medidas morfométricas foram retiradas de todos os indivíduos capturados e posteriormente recolhidos seus estômagos. Os peixes foram separados de acordo com a fase de desenvolvimento, juvenis e adultos. Também foram tomados seu peso total, comprimento padrão e aferidas onze medidas lineares, utilizadas para obter os índices que representam os atributos ecomorfológicos. Os itens alimentares foram identificados e separados até menor nível taxonômico possível, sendo o mais frequente o camarão Macrobrachium amazonicum (Heller, 1862). Foi possível observar que nos juvenis os itens ingeridos apresentavam maior amplitude no tamanho em comparação com os adultos. Dos dados morfométricos observa-se que os valores de largura da cabeça são maiores nos juvenis e os valores da altura do corpo são mais elevados nos adultos, sendo estes fatores importantes para determinar o tamanho da presa ingerida pelo peixe. Conclui-se que a espécie Plagioscion squamosissimus mostrou relação positiva entre a morfologia e alimentação ao longo do desenvolvimento ontogenético evidenciado pela variação de comprimento dos itens ingeridos entre juvenis e adultos, porém não houve distinção em relação ao alimento ingerido entre eles.

The freshwater drum Aplodinotus grunniens is a species widely distributed in North America. In the Mexican southeast, this species occurs in the Usumacinta River, where it supports an artisanal fishery. In this regard, the present study was conducted to supply detailed information on the female reproductive cycle of this species. Calculations of gonadosomatic (GSI) and hepatosomatic (HSI) indexes, histological and visual staging of ovaries as well as the staging of oocyte development were applied together to determine the reproductive changes during an annual cycle. The histological analysis revealed the presence of spawning capable females throughout the year, and the distribution frequencies of oocyte diameters displayed the continuous occurrence of mature oocytes, with great data dispersion and different modal groups. These observations were further corroborated by the presence of alternating peaks and drops in the GSI and HSIs, which were correlated with the occurrence of maturing and spawned females. These data, taken together, reveal that A. grunniens from the Usumacinta River is a partial spawner with asynchronous ovarian development and undetermined fecundity that reproduces year-round, but with spawning occurring preferably during the rainfallflooding season (June to November). The Usumacinta River seems to be a permanently favorable environment for sheltering, feeding and growth of A. grunniens broods, especially during the flooding season. The information generated in this study will be useful for the development of management strategies in the wild as well as for the exploration of A. grunniens as a potential species for aquaculture production in southern Mexico.
