Description of three more new species of the genus Ananteris

Abstract: Three new species of the genus Ananteris Thorell have been discovered in Brazil. Ananteris desiderio sp. n., Ananteris camacan sp. n. and Ananteris infuscata sp. n. are respectively described from specimens collected in the regions of São Desidério, Camacã, Rebio UNA and Jequié in the state of Bahia, and Grão Mogol and Novo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. New records are also proposed for Ananteris luciae Lourenço, Ananteris mauryi Lourenço and Ananteris franckei Lourenço. The number of known A… Show more

“…The other four species were represented by single records. To date, nine Ananteris species have been reported from the Brazilian Amazon (Lourenço et al 2013), and our findings confirm the occurrence of this genus in Acre. However, more specimens are required to make an identification at species level, given that ACTA AMAZONICA the only individual examined was a juvenile, and therefore, difficult to identify.…”

“…However, in most cases, the species are extremely rare and present very limited disjunct distributions. According to Giupponi et al [24], Lourenc ¸o and Duhem [25] and Lourenc ¸o et al [26], the totality of the known material of Ananteris preserved in official collections may be represented by less than 600 specimens.…”

“…Back to the genus Ananteris, and as underlined before (Lourenço et al, 2013), this genus was originally created for the species Ananteris balzanii Thorell, 1891, described from the State of Mato Grosso in Brazil (for more precisions refer to Lourenço, 2020). A second species Ananteris festae Borelli, 1899 was described from the forests of the Rio Peripá in Ecuador, followed by a third species Ananteris cussinii Borelli, 1910 from Cagua in Venezuela.…”

“…It was however with the revision by Lourenço (1982) that the number of new species described increased continuously. The pace of description of new species was even accelerated in recent years, mainly from the faunas of Venezuela (Gonzalez-Sponga, 2006) and Guianas (Ythier et al, 2020), but to some extent also for the Brazilian fauna (e. g. Giupponi et al, 2009;Lourenço et al, 2013;Lourenço & Motta, 2019). In a recent synopsis, Dupré (2020) indicates that 92 species were described up to 2020.…”
