Description of Plerocerci and Adults of a New Species ofGrillotia(Cestoda: Trypanorhyncha) in Teleosts and Elasmobranchs From the Patagonian Shelf Off Argentina

Abstract: A new species of Grillotia was found from teleosts and elasmobranchs along the Patagonian shelf off Argentina. Grillotia patagonica n. sp. is described from plerocerci recovered from gadiform (Moridae) and perciform fish (Cheilodactylidae, Bovichtidae, and Nototheniidae) and adults from the smallthorn sand skate Psammobatis rudis (Rajiformes, Rajidae). Grillotia patagonica most closely resembles species in the Grillotia erinaceus species complex (viz., Grillotia borealis, Grillotia brayi, Grillotia dollfusi, G… Show more

“…Even if columnar spinitriches are widely distributed among tapeworms, being reported in phyllobothriids, lecanicephalideans, litobothrideans, tetraphyllideans, and trypanorhynchs (Aminjan & Malek, ; Chervy, ; Malek et al, ; Menoret & Ivanov, ; Ruhnke, ; Schaeffner & Beveridge, ), the gongylate projections observed in O. schmittii seem to be restricted to phyllobothrideans. Actually, from the 24 genera in Phyllobothriidea, six have been reported possessing gongylate columnar spinitriches (i.e., Clistobothrium Dailey & Vogelbein, 1990; Orectolobicestus Ruhnke, Caira & Carpenter, ; Orygmatobothrium; Paraorygmatobothrium Ruhnke, ; Phyllobothrium van Beneden, ; and Pitophorus Southwell, 1925) (Chervy, ; Malek et al, ; Ruhnke, ; Ruhnke, Caira, & Pickering, ).…”

“…Palm () presented a generic diagnosis in which the microtriches were described for the first time. The data on the microtriches of this genus was complemented when Menoret and Ivanov () described the microthrix patterns of Grillotia carvajalregorum and G . patagonica .…”
