Description of new endemic species of the genus Niphargus Schiödte, 1849 (Amphipoda: Niphargidae) from a karst spring in Zagros Mountains in Iran

Abstract: New species of the genus Niphargus is described and named as N. kermanshahi sp. nov. from a karst spring in west of Iran. This species is identified based on the analysis of morphological characters and 28S ribosomal DNA sequences. Taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of this species is discussed in comparison to other Iranian species of Niphargus genus.

“…n. is the equal ratio of the length of rami in uropod I. This character was not observed in other Iranian species (Karaman 1998, Hekmatara et al 2013, Esmaeili-Rineh et al 2015b, 2016a. This character seen only in N. nadarini favitor in the Middle East (Karaman 2012), but, two taxa differ in the ratio of palpus to outer plate length in maxilla I, the number of robust setae at the base of nail in pereopods IV-VII and the number of robust setae in outer surface of palmar corners in gnathopods I-II.…”

“…This region is composed mainly of the karstic carbonate formations, and its karstic aquifers are among the most important karst reservoirs in the western part of Iran (Raeisi & Stevanovic 2010). Due to the wide geographical range and geological conditions coupled with the climatologically diverse environments, the Zagros Mountains range provides a great diversity of species in aquatic and terrestrial habitat types (Smith 1953, Sargeran et al 2008, Akmali et al 2011, Esmaeili-Rineh et al 2016a, EsmaeiliRineh et al 2016b, Afroosheh et al 2016, Fathipour et al 2016, Shahabi et al 2017, Mamaghani-Shishvan et al 2017, and it is considered as a centre for the origin of numerous species (Coad & Vilenkin 2004).…”

“…For five Niphargus species we had only 28S sequences, and previous studies proved to be genetically and morphologically distinct from other Niphargus species (Hekmatara et al, 2013;Esmaeili-Rineh et al, 2016, 2017a, 2018. These species, however, are known from single sites and could be unambiguously included into the dataset.…”

“…Also, the maxillar palpus in N. urmiensis sp. nov. is short and not reaching the tip of the outer lobe of maxilla I, this character is rare among niphargids, but it has been reported in N. kermanshahi Esmaeili-Rineh, Heidari, Fišer & Akmali, 2016, N. sohrevardensis Esmaeili-Rineh, Sari, Fišer & Bargrizaneh, 2017, N. borisi Esmaeili-Rineh, Sari & Fišer, 2015and N. ilamensis Esmaeili-Rineh, Sari, Fišer & Bargrizaneh, 2017from Iran and N. auerbachi Schellenberg, 1934 from Switzerland.
