Description of morphological characters of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) genetic resources

Abstract: Lettuce (<i>Lactuca sativa</i>) is the most important crop in the group of leafy vegetables. It is characterized by considerable morphological and genetic variation. The crop comprises seven main groups of cultivars (including oilseed lettuce) differing phenotypically; they are usually described as morphotypes. Lettuce breeding is primarilly focused on various morphological features and resistance against diseases and pests. The accurate description of lettuce germplasm provides basic information u… Show more

“…There are tremendous morphological variations such as leaf length, shape, size, color, and heading type in different types of lettuce [83] . Leaf anatomical structure that closely related to photosynthetic performance also varies greatly among and within plant species under different environmental conditions [84][85][86] .…”

“…The study material included 596 accessions of L. sativa and 615 accessions belonging to eight wild species assigned to either the primary, secondary or tertiary lettuce gene pool (Koopman, 2002). butterhead, cos, crisp, cutting, latin, stalk and oilseed lettuce (Krístková et al, 2008;Mou, 2008). Investigated accessions of cultivated lettuce included all generally recognized crop types, i.e.…”

“…Lettuce cultivars originated from different regions of the world and the complex breeding lines are hardly dated with precision (de Vries, 1997). Mediterranean and Chinese cultivars are regarded as the oldest, and tomb wall paintings of garden lettuce appear in numerous Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom tombs in Egypt showing evidence for cultivation since 2680 BC (Křístková et al, 2008;Zohary et al, 2012). Today, lettuce cultivars are classified in 'cultivar groups'.…”
