Description of Henneguya jaczoi sp. n. (myxosporea, myxobolidae) from Perca fluviatilis (L.) (pisces, percidae) with some remarks on the systematics of Henneguya spp. of european fishes

Abstract: A new Henneguya species, H. jaczoi sp. n., is described from perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Lake Balaton, Hungary. This species infects the palatal region of the fish, forming large plasmodia in the thickened caudal part of the buccal cavity and at the dorsal ends of the cartilaginous gill arches. The species differs from the gill-dwelling Henneguya species of perch and pike (Esox lucius) both morphologically and in molecular aspects. The authors conclude that the type species H. psorospermica Thélohan is a sp… Show more

“…were confirmed as M. tilapiae, M. agolus, and M. brachysporus. The nucleotide sequence of the 18S rRNA locus of Henneguya exhibited similarity with sequences reported by Morsy et al [38] and Emeish et al [15] in Egypt, as well as Sze ´kely et al [39] in Hungary and Vieira et al [40] in Brazil. BLAST analysis of the 18S rRNA gene of M. agolus, M. tilapiae, and M. brachysporus corresponded with findings by Abdel-Gaber et al [12].…”

“…Myxosporeans (Cnidaria: Myxosporea) are common, diverse parasites of marine and freshwater fishes (Lom and Dyková 2006). The genus Henneguya Thélohan, 1892, in family Myxobolidae, is the third most speciose myxosporean genus after Myxidium and Myxobolus, with > 200 Henneguya species described (Eiras 2002;Eiras and Adriano 2012;Székely et al 2018). While most Henneguya species do not cause overt disease in their hosts, a few are economically important pathogens.…”
