Description of a new species from Clarias maclareni and phylogenetical analysis of Quadriacanthus (Monogenea, Dactylogyridae) species transfers between clariid and non-clariid fish hosts in Cameroon

Abstract: Recently in Cameroon, two species belonging to Quadriacanthus: Q. anaspidoglanii Akoumba, Tombi & Bilong Bilong, 2017 and Q. euzeti Nack, Pariselle & Bilong Bilong, 2016 have been recorded on gill filaments of Notoglanidium macrostoma (Siluriformes, Claroteidae) in the Memou’ou River (Nyong Basin) and Papyrocranus afer (Osteoglossiformes, Notopteridae) in Lake Ossa, respectively. These records have been considered the result of lateral transfers from Clariidae to a Claroteidae host for the first case (… Show more

“…Recently, an integrative approach combining genetic characterization with commonly used, taxonomically important morphological characters has become the gold standard with respect to taxonomical research on monogeneans (e.g. Řehulková et al ., 2020; Acosta et al ., 2022; Bahanak et al ., 2022; Jin et al ., 2022; Nitta, 2023), as, only by evaluating both morphological and molecular data, can the potential complexes of cryptic species (morphologically indistinguishable and closely related) be revealed, as previously documented for Gyrodactylus (Bueno-Silva et al ., 2011), Cichlidogyrus (Kmentová et al ., 2016) and Dactylogyrus (Rahmouni et al ., 2017; Benovics et al ., 2018).…”
