Description of a new relict eriophyoid mite, Loboquintus subsquamatus n. gen. & n. sp. (Eriophyoidea, Phytoptidae, Pentasetacini) based on confocal microscopy, SEM, COI barcoding and novel CLSM anatomy of internal genitalia

Abstract: A new pentasetacine mite Loboquintus subsquamatus n. gen. & n. sp. was found living under scale-like leaves of 2-3 years old twigs of Cupressus sempervirens in Montenegro. This mite species possesses a number of morphological features (uncommon teardrop-shaped body, traits of prosoma, atypical primitive anatomy of the genital apparatus and morphological traits of immatures) which clearly distinguish it from all other known eriophyoids. Adults of L. subsquamatus have seta vi situated on the anterior margin of a… Show more

“…In our previous papers we presented CLSM data on internal genitalia of four major phytoptid groups: pentasetacines (Chetverikov et al 2013, phytoptines Chetverikov 2014a, b), novophytoptines (Chetverikov in press) and mackiellines . In this study we investigated genital anatomy of nalepellines (gg.…”

“…A five-setous prodorsal shield is considered to be ancestral. Among contemporary eriophyoids, the most complete chaetom is possessed by only two monobasic genera-Pentasetacus (Schliesske 1985) and Loboquintus (Chetverikov et al 2013)-both of which are considered early-derivative mite genera and inhabit conifers. Pentasetacus araucariae lives on Araucaria araucana, whereas Loboquintus subsquamatus lives on Cupressus sempervirens.…”

“…However, whereas there is complete suppression of eugenital setae in female eriophyoids (Loboquintus Chetverikov & Petanovic. may be an exception (Chetverikov et al 2013)), there is noticeable variation in this character in Tydeoidea. For example, there is complete suppression in both males and females in the subfamily Pronematinae, and females have fewer pairs of eugenital setae in the Triophtydeinae, but they are not completely suppressed.…”

“…The musculature of about 100 specimens, comprising five different species (Cecidophyopsis ribis, Loboquintus subsquamatus, Phytoptus avellanae, Trisetacus cf bagdasariani and T. cf grosmanni) were investigated in order to check if their reproductive anatomy had been interpreted correctly; the male genitalia of all five species had already been studied or briefly discussed Chetverikov et al 2013;2014a, b, c). For filamentous actin (F-actin) staining the mites were fixed in 4 % paraformaldehyde (PFA) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer, and stained in diluted TRITC-phalloidin (P1951 Sigma-Aldrich).…”
