Description and performance of track and primary-vertex reconstruction with the CMS tracker

Abstract: A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For tt events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average trackreconstruction efficienc… Show more

“…should be mentioned that all leptons and jets four momenta are smeared according to LHC results reported in [41,42]. The smearing is based on a gaussian distribution with a width of 15% of the jet energy and 2% of the lepton transverse momentum.…”

“…The first layer of the detector encountered by outgoing particles from the collisions is the tracker, composed of a small silicon pixel surrounded by a large silicon strip tracker [115]. Both tracker subdetectors are cylindershaped and occupy a total 5.8 m in length and 2.5 m in diameter.…”

“…It consists of 1440 silicon pixel and 15 148 silicon strip detector modules and is, like ECAL and HCAL, located in the 3.8 T field of the superconducting solenoid. It provides an impact parameter resolution of 50-175 µm [44], and thus, precise interaction vertex reconstruction using charged particle tracks within its acceptance.…”
