Description and Evaluation of the Characteristics of the NCAR High-Resolution Land Data Assimilation System

Abstract: This paper describes important characteristics of an uncoupled high-resolution land data assimilation system (HRLDAS) and presents a systematic evaluation of 18-month-long HRLDAS numerical experiments, conducted in two nested domains (with 12-and 4-km grid spacing) for the period from 1 January 2001 to 30 June 2002, in the context of the International H 2 O Project (IHOP_2002). HRLDAS was developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to initialize land-state variables of the coupled Weather … Show more

“…In this study, the Noah land surface model (Chen et al, 2007) version 3.3 was run offline within the LIS framework at 1 km spatial resolution over a 15 × 15 km area in eastern Nebraska, near the town of Waco. The size and location of the domain were designed to encompass the study area of Franz et al (2015) to make use of the CRNP rover data, human-practice information, and point and spatial observations produced by their work, as discussed in Sect.…”

“…Wind speed and relative humidity data are based on the Noah land surface model (Chen and Dudhia, 2001;Chen et al, 2007;Ek et al, 2003) from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) (Rodell et al, 2004). We use the GLDAS_NOAH025SUBP_3H (Hydrological Sciences Branch at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center , GSFC/HSB) data set provided in 3-hourly temporal and 0.25…”

“…Soil temperature and moisture are derived from the global SYNOP network, applying an optimal interpolation method which is described by Douville et al (2001). To overcome this problem for the future, the NCAR High-Resolution Land Data Assimilation System (HRLDAS; Chen et al, 2007) can be applied using forcing data from the ECMWF MARS and a short term WRF forecast.…”
